You might enjoy this video of me in conversation with Paula Derry a fellow shiatsu practitioner and health professional (PhD in clinical and social psychology, Yale University). I have started using the word "Maturessence" as a more appropriate word for the menopause - suggested by one of her student's (Liza Krivine).
We explore different perspectives on the menopause – the biomedical model, biology, anthropology and shiatsu - and how it is a unique experience for every woman. The menopause is a phenomenon of midlife not old age. It offers a time to pass into new leadership roles and come to a new sense of wholeness and personal integration, and so we don’t expect women to become “demented”. However the transition can be challenging, especially if we don’t have the support to make the changes we may need to make in our life, or when our lifestyle or environment are unhealthy. We share our approaches to shiatsu and how it can be a powerful tool to support these changes.
